Our Approach
Jalawelo’s approach to helping communities includes building capacity, empowering changemakers, and generating income to drive positive change.
Capacity Building
Jalawelo evaluates local leadership and existing efforts in place by local government, nonprofits, volunteers, and families. Our goal is to identify solutions and resources to strengthen their ability to improve the well-being of the individuals they serve. When leadership is committed, attainable goals are set, processes are streamlined, and proper mechanisms for accountability are in place, we can be more confident that available resources will be used wisely and directed toward sustainable programs.
Empowering Changemakers
Changemakers are passionate individuals committed to creating a positive change in their own lives, in their communities, and in the world, while inspiring others to do the same. Changemakers are critical to the success of both new and existing programs. When changemakers are engaged in these programs and tuned in to Jalawelo’s priorities related to sustainability, they extend Jalawelo’s impact and are empowered to lead.
Supporting Income Generation
While remedial education and basic training opportunities exist for uneducated and undereducated individuals, finding viable income sources remains challenging. Jalawelo assists individuals in identifying income-earning opportunities tailored to their circumstances, offering direct support for business ideas, and partnering with community-based organizations to develop wider-reaching programs. Through training and strategic guidance, Jalawelo empowers both individuals and communities, investing in income-generating initiatives when appropriate.
“We aim to build a broad-based technology-driven grassroots coalition effort that will impact social, economic, and spiritual outcomes in Jamaica.
This requires the articulation and execution of a shared vision among talented and thinking professionals who can effectively collaborate to fuel an exciting, rewarding, and sustainable change movement.”
— Donna Gabbadon, Founder, Jalawelo
