Creating Safe Spaces for Play: Transforming Amritt Basic School

Fulfilling a need for proper security and a safe space for the students of Amritt Basic School.

Creating safe areas for play in under-resourced schools is not just about physical security; it's about fostering an environment where children feel protected, valued, and free to explore their potential. The transformation at Amritt Basic School exemplifies the impact that community support and dedicated efforts can have on the well-being and future of young learners.

In the heart of Harmony Hall, St. Mary, Amrita Basic School stands as a vital pillar of the community. This school has been a beacon of hope for needy families in Harmony Hall and surrounding areas, catering to children aged 3 to 6. For over 30 years, Amritt Basic School has provided early childhood education on a piece of land generously donated to a local church. The school's legacy is deeply rooted in the community, with one of its first students now serving as a pastor in the very church that supports it.

Despite its long-standing service and the commitment of its Parent Teacher Association (PTA) and school board, Amritt Basic School faced significant challenges, particularly regarding security. The PTA had undertaken numerous projects to benefit the school, yet they struggled to raise sufficient funds to install a much-needed fence around the school compound. This lack of proper security left the pupils, staff, and equipment vulnerable, highlighting a critical need for a safe and secure environment.

Recognizing this urgent need, Jalawelo stepped in to make a difference. Hearing about the school's plight, Jalawelo pledged to help fund the installation of a fence during the summer break, aiming to create a safer space for the children to learn and play.

The installation of the fence has transformed Amritt Basic School, providing a secure environment where children can learn and grow without the fear of external threats. Safe spaces to have fun and explore are crucial for students’ development, allowing them to focus on their education and play freely within the school grounds.
